For Parents, Pastoral Care Committees, Caregivers
Making Every Moment Count (38 mins)
After multiple, unsuccessful chemotherapies, Mikaela knows that she has a choice: she can let her brain
tumor grow "and just go away, up to heaven," or she can put up with "needles and pokes and all that stuff
and make it go away, and even perhaps it might not come back." Sometimes she feels ready to stop her
treatments, but then she thinks about how much her mother will miss her…
Thoughtful and evocative, this new video addresses the complex issues surrounding end-of-life care for
children. Psychologist and award-winning filmmaker Leora Kuttner, PhD, profiles five children with life
threatening illness, and the families and health professionals who support them. The film clearly shows that,
3
despite popular belief, children can talk about end-of-life issues if given proper support, and that doing so
can help both them and their families cope with the realities of their situation.
Two DVD programs from the ProActive Parenting Series:
With the ProActive Parenting series, you don't have to be a "parenting expert" to lead a class or small
group. With DVD segments from Jim Williams, a well-known author and national speaker, it's easy to
coordinate a class, facilitate discussions, and help lead a group of parents through a period of learning,
growing and sharing.
Communication with Your Child or Teen (DVD) 60 mins
Communication with Your Child or Teen helps adults learn to be better listeners and model good
communication techniques for the whole family. Sessions cover recognizing barriers to good
communication, stages of childhood development, learning your child's communication style, and
how to become an effective listener. Each DVD contains four sessions with 15 minutes of video
including three segments of video for each class.
Week 1: Recognizing the barriers we build
Week 2: Understanding your child's ages and stages
Week 3: Learning your child's communication "style"
Week 4: Improving communication in your home
Single Parenting (DVD) 60 mins

Each DVD contains four sessions with 15 minutes of video including three segments of video for
each class.

Week 2: Leading your family along the right path
Week 3: Confronting challenges of discipline
Week 4: Providing for your family's needs
Caring For Waters: 2006 Lenten Series (VHS and DVD)
Sources of drinkable water are becoming increasingly scarce throughout the world. Communities and
countries are actively looking for ways to ensure safe water for everyone and discourage those who want to
exploit this essential resource. This series looks at efforts in Canada and Kenya to find sustainable solutions
to water problems.
Rural Vulnerability
The United Church's Five Oaks Retreat and Education Centre has overcome a
direct threat to their groundwater system from a nearby gravel pit, but faces ongoing challenges as
urban sprawl and industrial expansion change the environment around them, creating more demand
on the water system. They manage their water through diligent conservation and faith.
A Shining River
The Annapolis River Project episode explores this habitat in Nova Scotia where
fresh and salt waters meet, and highlights how United Church members are protecting their
community and their environment.
Invisible Residue
In 1953, uranium was discovered 30 miles north of the Serpent River First
Nations Reserve, in the middle of Alec Meawasige's trap line and in the heart of a sacred mountain.
It drastically changed the environment and the community downstream. Art's niece, Bonnie Devine,
uses her own art work to tell the story of Rooster Rock and toxic residue that still lies in Serpent
River.
One Drop at a Time
On this program we visit two water projects: a sand dam in southern Kenya
used by the Masai herders who populate this arid region and a rainwater collection project in a slum
north of Nairobi, where 250,000 people live in huts perched precariously on the hillsides. Both are
funded by church-based partners.
Pilgrimage Towards Right Relationship (26 mins)
Relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples in Canada are incredibly complex, little
known or understood and often trigger intense emotion. This is particularly true about the Indian Residential
4
Schools and their legacy. How did this come to be and what can we learn? This is what a small group of
volunteers set out to unravel. Working ecumenically, and with a great deal of assistance from area churches,
the planning team drew their faith and the wisdom contained in 1996 Report to the Royal Commission on
Aboriginal Peoples to organize gatherings called Nurturing Deep Under-standing and Hope. These
gatherings were process oriented and designed to facilitate a larger ongoing process, the Pilgrimage Towards
Right Relationships. Drawing on the first four gatherings (starting in 2001), this video outlines their process
and spirit. This taste of our experience is shared to nurture your understanding and hope while proposing an
alternative way to educate about these complex and damaged relationships. We hope you will join us on this
sacred journey. Blessings for pilgrimage towards right relationships.
MOST OF THE FOLLOWING VIDEOS HAVE BEEN PURCHASED BY AVEL
with the help of the 2004 “Laps for the Library” campaign

Borderless VHS and DVD 25 mins
Borderless is an educational video that gives voice to the struggles and dreams of undocumented workers in
Canada. Geraldo, a Costa Rican construction worker, and Angela, a second-generation Caribbean domestic
worker, struggle against labor exploitation. Against the odds, they work to build a future for families
painfully separated by restrictive immigration laws. Viewers meet an often invisible workforce and reflect
on the hidden costs of sustaining our first world economy. This video comes with a study guide that offers
background information, discussion questions, workshop exercises and tips for organizing a community
screening.
Suzuki Speaks – VHS and DVD 45 mins
Suzuki Speaks
Captures the passion and vision of world-renowned scientist and environmentalist Dr David
Suzuki, who delivers the most important message of his career. He speaks about humans and our place in the
universe. His is a fresh perspective and a timely catalyst. This is a documentary that you won't just watch -
you'll experience! In a stunning fusion of compositing, 3D effects and live footage, this video breaks new
ground. Visual effects artist Torrance Hurd and his team peer into the mind of a top scientist.
Experiencing the Heart of Christianity (Book and DVD)
A companion to the bestselling book by Marcus Borg (Heart of Christianity), this 12-session experiential
program will enable you to engage the issues that lie at the heart of Christianity today. Delve into such
topics as the Bible, God, Jesus, sin, and how to live in a multi-faith, pluristic society. This printed guide will
guide you through these complicated issues using ritual and activities that honor a variety of learning styles.
This complete program guide for leaders includes detailed session outlines. The DVD provides a 12-part
mini course for leaders plus six clips of Marcus Borg that can be shown to groups. Participant resource
sheets are included in the book and on the DVD.
No Place Called Home – VHS and DVD 57 mins
Shot in an intimate, cinema verite style, No Place Called Home follows the Rice Family over the course of a
year as they move in search for affordable housing. My biggest dream is that all my kids make it in life, says
Kay Rice, who has just moved with husband, Karl, and her six children to a small, rundown rental house.
Just as the family´s circumstances are looking slightly better, things turn sour with the landlord who
threatens eviction. Kay, worried that a veiled threat in a letter may mean losing her children, decides to take
her landlord to court. With a photojournalist’s eye, director Craig Chivers infuses No Place Called Home
with humanity and stark realism as he illustrates the desperate struggle faced by the Rices and a growing
number of working poor families across Canada.

When Did I See You Hungry? (37 min)
Narrated by Martin Sheen, this documentary film by award winning author and director Gerard Thomas
Straub is a photographic meditation on the plight of the poor and our responsibility to help. The film features
more than 250 powerful and poignant black and white photographs from Mr. Straub's book When Did I See
You Hungry? [The San Damiano Foundation produces films that showcase the active and contemplative
dimensions of the spirituality of St. Francis and Clare of Assisi, along with the Franciscan concern for social
justice, peace and non-violence.]
Two new DVDs by John Dominic Crossan
Preeminent historical Jesus scholar John Dominic Crossan is author of twenty books on the historical Jesus,
four of which have become national religious bestsellers: The Historical Jesus (1991); Jesus: a
Revolutionary Biography (1991); Who Killed Jesus (1995), and The Birth of Christianity (1998).
• Paul: appalling or appealing apostle? (DVD)
In this 50-minute introduction to Paul, John Dominic Crossan addresses challenges to understanding
Paul, three different "Pauls", Paul's character and theology, and gender balance and imbalance in the
New Testament. The DVD contains a bonus sermon by Crossan entitled, "Justice as Love".
Crossan's latest book (co-authored with Jonathan I. Reed) is in search of Paul: How Jesus' Apostle
Opposed Rome's Empire with God's Kingdom (2004).
• Victory and Peace or Justice and Peace? (DVD)
On this DVD, John Dominic Crossan explores the question "victory and peace, or justice and
peace?" through four lectures and one sermon. Each lecture is approximately 50 minutes long, and
each is divided into multiple chapters allowing for a flexibility of use that ranges from 4 weeks to 12
weeks. There are "wrap-up" questions for the end of every session, regardless of whether you do
four or twelve weeks.
What Size Should We Be?: Visioning the In-Between Church
An Alban Institute video with Alice Mann; 66 mins; divided into 4-5 sessions
This video incorporates and expands on many of the ideas in Alice Mann’s book The In-Between Church:
Navigating Size Transitions in Congregations (Alban, 1998). The video provides congregational leaders
with a provocative, comprehensive guide to the theory of size transition. In addition, Mann outlines steps for
exploring what has been happening in a congregation and possible solutions that will help members discover
and carry out the ministry to which God is calling them. Easily carried out in four sessions, with an
additional session on special issues.
Living into the New World: How Cultural Trends Affect Your Congregation
An Alban Institute video with Gil Rendle; 40 mins; divided into 2 sessions
The context in which congregational leaders live and do ministry often feels like a wilderness. In this video,
Alban Institute senior consultant Gil Rendle describes key trends in our culture that affect the work of faith
communities. Changes in core values – the drift from deferred pleasure to instant gratification, the
increasing emphasis on the individual, and a shift from a culture of sameness to one of diversity – all have
changed our mission. Congregational boards, strategic planning teams, and adult study groups will find this
video useful for developing an understanding of cultural trends, so they can make more informed decisions
about their congregation’s ministry both in their community and in the larger world
The Once and Future Church: A Study Resource
An Alban Institute book and video with Loren B. Mead; 90 mins; divided into 3 sessions.
Over the past two generations, church people of many denominations have found that many of the tried and
true ways of doing things no longer work for our churches today. Few leaders or members of churches feel
the kind of confidence that church people felt in the 40’s and 50’s, fewer still have the confidence that they
know how to lead churches in such a time of change. A broad consensus is forming in churches that we are
in the midst of a major change in how we perceive church, ministry and mission. This video course offers
three things: tools for thinking about what has happened to your congregation; insight into the functions your
congregation must fulfill in the future; and clues about what obstacles you might encounter. The guide book
offers two approaches: an intensive six-session program for key lay leaders, members of strategic planning
groups, and board members; or a less intense educational process of three sessions for a wider participation
by members.
Why Thee Wed? (DVD) 50 mins
In 2003, British Columbia became the second Canadian province to
recognize same-sex marriage. Filmmaker Cal Garingan looks beyond the headlines and introduces the eight
couples who challenged the law in court. Why did they plunge into a scorching debate that meant their lives
would be publicly judged? What does it mean to them to exchange marriage vows? As controversy swirls
around this issue worldwide, Why Thee Wed? offers surprising and diverse perspectives on what it means
for gay and lesbian couples to walk down the aisle.
Peace Child (Adults and Sr. Youth) 30 mins.
The Classic True Missionary Drama: The amazing story of Don and Carol Richardson and their missionary
work in the jungles of the Southwest Pacific. When inter-tribal warfare breaks out, a chief offers his son to
the opposing tribe as the means of bringing peace, an act that makes the Gospel message of the ultimate
Peace Child truly understandable. Note: This film contains some brief nudity in the native fashion.
For Youth
*Don't Sit on Your Stuff - with Ted & Lee and Tangled Blue
VHS & DVD (Jr.High/Sr.High/Adult) 21 mins
Help youth discuss and begin to live out Christian stewardship principles. Ted and Lee, as disciples Peter
and Andrew, explore Jesus' parable of the master and his three servants and figure out that they shouldn't "sit
on their stuff." Tangled Blue perform their original song, "Gift of Grace", bringing fresh twists of
interpretation to two stories of giving and grace - Mary washing Jesus' feet with expensive perfume, and the
parable of the widow who gave all of her money at the temple. Also features a youth group's discussion of
what happens when giving means reaching out to a member of the group who has cancer.
*It’s a Girl’s World: a documentary about social bullying (ages 14 +; 67 mins)
It’s a Girl’s World takes us inside the tumultuous relationships of a clique of popular 10-year old girls.
Playground bullying captured on camera shows a disturbing picture of how these girls use their closest
friendship to hurt each other - with shunning, whispering and mean looks - to win social power within the
group. By comparison, the tragic story of a 14-year old girl who killed herself after enduring months of
rumors and verbal threats is a stark reminder that social bullying can spiral out of control. This video
shatters the myth that social bullying among girls is an acceptable part of growing up.
The Fourth Wiseman (Jr.High/Sr.High/Adult) 72 mins
He gave the greatest gift of all. Based on Henry van Dyke’s classic, The Story of the Other Wise Man, this
fictional story set in Biblical times is told in gently comic terms. A Magi named Artaban (Martin Sheen) sees
a sign in the heavens that he hopes will lead him and his faithful servant to the Messiah. Artaban takes with
him three precious gifts to present to the Messiah. For 33 years Artaban pursues Jesus, only to miss Him at
every turn. Along the way, Artaban uses his gifts to help people in dire need. He now has nothing to present
to the Messiah when he finds Him. The story culminates on Easter Sunday as Artaban, old and dying, finally
encounters the new King, bringing peace to his life. A deeply moving experience examining what true faith
really means. Starring Martin Sheen and Alan Arkin.

misuse the name of the Lord your God" and "Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy."
When Seth's mom, Leila, is called away, snarly old Jeshanah is asked to take care of Seth. Not the wisest
choice, since Jeshanah swears (conveniently an animal noise or sound covers the actual words) and proudly
sings of his warped sense of values. Plus, Jeshanah makes Seth and all the animals work themselves to the
bone on the Sabbath. Thankfully, Moses and Seth's mom arrive in time to set Jeshanah straight.

(Piercing The Darkness And The Oath) to teens (Nightmare Academy And Hangman's Curse) to very young
children (The Cooper Kid series). Peretti hosts this Christian film for young children in his guise of "Mr.
Henry," an energetic inventor and storyteller whirling around his workshop while combining upbeat music,
slapstick comedy, and Biblical scriptures to make his points about those "wild and wacky Bible stories." This
