What’s God Up To? Bible Stories Through New Eyes - Amy-Jill Levine DVD, Study Guide - 6-session study
For many, Bible stories are the food that sustains them, but have you ever wondered why God would put a tree in the Garden of Eden and then tell Adam and Eve not to eat its fruit? Or what God was up to when he ordered Abraham to kill his son Isaac? What do these stories teach us? In What’s God Up To?, provocative and popular biblical author Amy-Jill Levine asks edgy questions about familiar Bible stories, causing them to lose their familiarity so we can consider them anew. One of Levine’s colleagues said if she offered a course about the phone book, 50 students would sign up. You’ll see why as you discover the David and Bathsheba story from Uriah’s point of view and revisit the story of Jesus’ encounter with the Canaanite woman from her perspective. UMCom Productions.

Niigaanibatowaad: Front Runners DVD and study guide; 47 mins
At a special ceremony at the opening of the 1989 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, seven First Nations men in their fifties entered the stadium in war canoes. One of them held the Games torch. In 1967 when Winnipeg first hosted the Pan Am Games, ten outstanding athletic teenage boys were chosen to run 800 kilometers over an ancient message route with the Games torch. When the runners arrived at the stadium, they were not allowed to enter with the torch. Instead, a non-Aboriginal runner was given the honour.
Thirty-two years later, the province of Manitoba issued an official apology. Nine of the ten men chosen for the 1967 Pan Am games torch run were from residential schools. Niigaanibatowaad is about the segregation of the Aboriginal athletes and the despair and abuse suffered in the school system. Niigaanibatowaad: Front Runners is a story of survival, hope, reconciliation and a dream for a new beginning that transcends hatred and racism.

Three new dvds at AVEL from the Simple Living Network.
1. RADICALLY simple DVD, 35 minutes
Jim Merkel, author of Radical Simplicity, leads by example on the path to simple and sustainable living.
In the face of looming ecological disaster, many people feel the need to change their own lifestyle as a necessary step in transforming our unsustainable way of life. But it's the first step that is often the most intimidating. In RADICALLY simple, we join engineer and author Jim Merkel as he presents his views on sustainable living in public presentations and workshops at his home. These meetings, which revolve around discussions on global economics and resource consumption, show Merkel leading by example. He demonstrates that a radically simple lifestyle - while at times intimidating - is not only possible but extremely satisfying. Scenes of Merkel fetching water from the woods, constructing an outhouse by hand, and using a solar cooker illustrate not only his ingenuity, but his total commitment to reducing his ecological footprint. Always encouraging, never judgmental, Merkel inspires audiences to take their own first steps on the path towards sustainability.
RADICALLY simple is a practical, personal answer to 21st century challenges that will appeal as much to "cultural creatives" and students as to policymakers and sustainability professionals.

2. The Ecological Footprint DVD, 30 minutes
Accounting For A Small Planet
Dr. Mathis Wackernagel introduces the Ecological Footprint, a resource accounting tool that measures human demand on the Earth. Humans are the most successful species on the planet. But our growing economy is placing unprecedented demand on the planet's limited ecological resources. How can we assure our future well-being? "We can choose to live on a depleted planet or we can choose to live on a rich, biologically diverse, more stable planet" proposes Dr. Mathis Wackernagel, co-creator of the Ecological Footprint. He suggests that an essential step in avoiding depletion is to track ecological assets, allowing us to make more informed choices. In just thirty minutes, the film paints a picture of our current global situation: for the first time, humanity is in "ecological overshoot" with annual demand on resources exceeding what Earth can regenerate each year. For Wackernagel, "Sustainability boils down to how we can all live well, how we can all have great lives, within the means of one small planet." He concludes on a hopeful note, showing how a new organization, Global Footprint Network, is partnering with government agencies, businesses, universities and NGOs to support the use of the Ecological Footprint and to help turn this vision of a sustainable future into reality.
DVD version: Includes both the U.S. Version (in acres) and the World Version (in hectares). Both can be accessed by chapter. DVD-ROM portion of the disc includes three Footprint Reports and two flyers.

MASSEY LECTURES 2008: PAYBACK (CD)
Audio: 5 CDs – 60 min. each
The most prestigious and eagerly anticipated non-fiction series of the year teams up with legendary poet, novelist and essayist Margaret Atwood to deliver a surprising look at the topic of debt. It’s a timely subject for our current period of economic upheaval, caused by the collapse of a system of interlocking debts. In her wide ranging, entertaining, and imaginative approach to the subject, Atwood proposes that debt is like air — something we take for granted until things go wrong. And then, while gasping for breath, we become very interested in it. Payback is not about practical debt management or high finance, although it does touch upon these subjects. Rather, it is an investigation into the idea of debt as an ancient and central motif in religion, literature, and the structure of human societies.

Renewal: Stories from America's Religious-Environmental Movement – dvd; 90 mins
[The RENEWAL Project - Across the nation, people of faith are standing up for the environment. Evangelical Christians are fighting mountaintop removal, a coal mining process that is decimating Appalachia. Muslims are supporting sustainable farming. Jews are helping children experience the bond between nature and spirituality. Interfaith Power and Light is mobilizing people of all faiths in a religious response to global warming. For the first time, the combined energy of these diverse activists is the driving force behind a feature-length documentary, entitled RENEWAL. Veteran film producers Marty Ostrow and Terry Kay Rockefeller have crisscrossed the country to capture these exciting stories of people whose passion and deep moral commitment are making a difference in a time of grave ecological threats.]
The DVD Renewal presents 9 separate stories or can be shown as a full length 90-minute documentary.
Crime Against Creation
In the mountains of Kentucky and West Virginia today's mining practices are literally removing the tops of mountains to extract coal to feed American power plants. The natural environment is being decimated, while burning the coal fuels global warming. Evangelical Christians have participated in an interfaith tour to bear witness to this devastation and to begin organizing against the practices that are destroying the land and polluting the waters of Appalachia. (11:20 mins)
Going Green
In New Jersey, GreenFaith, an interfaith coalition helps houses of worship make their buildings more environmentally sound and the members of their congregations more spiritually in tune with becoming better stewards of Creation. From workshops that invite people to explore their personal impact on the environment, to implementing recycling and composting, on up to the installation of solar panels, congregations in New Jersey are making remarkable strides. As GreenFaith's Executive Director says, "The hardest thing about taking action is sometimes just taking the first step."
(14:30 mins)
Food for Faith
In Chicago, which has a growing and diverse Muslim community, the interfaith organization Faith in Place has supported the development of Taqwa. Taqwa supplies organic meat to the Muslim community and everyone else who wants to support sustainable farming. This chicken, beef, and lamb is "Eco-Halal." The animals are humanely raised, fed an organic diet, and slaughtered in accordance with Islamic law. During the holy month of Ramadan, Taqwa members extend their tradition of charity to insure that poor communities can also eat this healthy and environmentally friendly meat.(15 mins)
Ancient Roots
In rural Connecticut, two programs offer unique opportunities for Jewish environmental education. At the Teva Learning Center, elementary school children encounter the natural world as they explore the woods, learn where their food comes from, and take responsibility for waste. At Adamah, a three-month environmental leadership training program, a small community of twenty-somethings engage in organic farming, sustainable living, and contemplative spiritual practice. These future leaders of the Jewish community offer an inspiring model to the Teva students. Together they are renewing the ecological wisdom inherent in Judaism and building a genuine commitment to tikkun olam, healing the world.(17:30 mins)
Compassion in Action
Buddhists in the San Francisco Bay area are working to save trees by encouraging greater use of recycled paper, especially by major magazine publishers. Their organization, Green Sangha, combines meditation and environmental education to promote non-confrontational forms of action emphasizing the interconnectedness of everyone and everything on the planet.
(11mins)
Eco-Justice
In coastal Mississippi, pollution from the chemical and petroleum industries has for decades caused elevated levels of disease - nervous disorders, asthma and cancer - in African American and other poor communities. Then, the flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina made these medical problems even worse. Now, through their churches, citizens are finding inspiration to conduct their own health surveys, to demand accountability from industry and to insist on action by government officials. (11:30 mins)
Sacred Celebration
The remaining historic farmland in the South Valley of Albuquerque, New Mexico is being rapidly devoured by commercial and residential development. Under the leadership of Franciscan Sister Joan Brown, this community of Hispanics, Native Americans, and Anglos is fighting back. During the festival of San Ysidro, patron saint of agriculture, they gather to consecrate the land that nourishes them and bless the waters that help the crops grow. Religious ritual and sacred celebration become a seedbed for their effective environmental action. (9:30 mins)

Refugees of the Blue Planet - Directed by Hélène Choquette/Jean-Philippe Duval DVD
Each year, millions of people the world over are driven to forced displacement. From the Maldives to Brazil, and even closer to home, here in Canada, the disturbing accounts of people who have been uprooted are amazingly similar. The enormous pressure placed on rural populations as a result of the degradation of their life-supporting environment is driving them increasingly further from their way of life. The Refugees of the Blue Planet sheds light on the little-known plight of a category of individuals who are suffering the repercussions of this reality: environmental refugees. They are constantly growing in number and often have no legal status, even though their right to a clean and sustainable environment has been violated.
