The Rev. Peter Drummond Fraser was a man of the word and of the Word. Wherever he served The United Church of Canada, in Saskatchewan or in his native Nova Scotia, his congregations were treated to thoughtful and thought-provoking sermons.
Peter loved the parables, and the stories that he wrote - gifts at Christmas that are as bright as the season’s wrapping paper – have the same wonder in the small dailyness of our lives and the potential for revolutionary encounters with the divine.
Peter was born in Halifax in 1943 and grew up in a large and loving family in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. His education at St. Francis Xavier University, University of Guelph, and Dalhousie University gave him opportunities to stretch his mind; but it was the ecumenical richness of the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax that shaped his gifts for ministry.
Peter flew kites on Ascension Sunday, camped with wife Libby and son Sam, watched baseball games, proudly carved his barbecued turkey for the family Thanksgiving gathering at the fishing camp, read in front of the fire while listening to good music, challenged friends to a dramatic-reading of “Antigone”, answered correctly most of the questions to the “Millennium Quiz” in the Globe and Mail. His enjoyment of the good things in life, blended with an acquaintance with pain, informed his faith in a God who came in human form to be one with us: immanent.
Peter Fraser died, much too soon, in February 2003, and the stories in this book can be his legacy to a world that needs the gifts of laughter, tears and hope that they bring.
Stories included:
  • Life's Work
  • Highways to Zion
  • The Plum Loaf
  • The Electric Mouse and the Christmas Cat
  • The Sheileen Manuscript
  • Christmas Present

Just wait... There's More
Surviving Cancer

This is the title of a book written by Linda Yates, who serves in the Lower Musquodoboit Pastoral Charge in the Truro Presbytery. The book, Linda says,
"...arose out of a conversation with colleagues around the fact that there seemed to be very little in the way of books that we felt comfortable giving our parishioners who were diagnosed with cancer or who loved someone who was diagnosed with cancer. Most of what is available does not reflect United Church theology or is too heavy and not user friendly. This book is meant to be enjoyed by everyone but also to be used as a resource for clergy and pastoral care givers."
A cancer survivor herself, Linda began to write her story, and the result, Just wait... There's More, is a sometimes humourous, sometimes deadly serious look at the bizarre and often crazy life of living in the land of cancer.
Just wait... There's More is available at UCRD (United Church Resource Distribution), Chapters and from the publisher at www.pottersfieldpress.com. Linda will also have copies available at Maritime Conference Annual Meeting in May.
